June: A Monthly Muse

June brings the Summer Solstice on the 21st - the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, with almost 17 hours of daylight here in the UK. Traditionally marked with bonfires, the solstice has long been associated with magic, mystery and midsummer celebrations.

June is a wonderful time to enjoy nature at its most abundant. Elderflowers are blooming in the hedgerows (perfect for making a refreshing cordial), insects are buzzing through gardens and meadows - which of these pollinators can you spot? - and young birds are venturing out of their nests.

If you can, leave out some fresh water for wildlife during warmer spells by topping up ponds, bird baths or even a simple dish of water. And if you're looking for inspiration to spend more time outdoors, why not join the Wildlife Trusts' 30 Days Wild challenge and discover a little more of the amazing natural world around you?
